Imagination Unbound Process

...a major turning point because I started to truly understand the major design elements and put them into action.

This animation explores one of my favorite quotes by Kate Spade. I started this animation by creating a word map of the quote. I started mapping out several keywords that I wanted to visually highlight throughout the animation.

Afterwards, I began developing rough sketches of different styleframes that I wanted throughout the piece. I wanted to create an abstract odyssey that the hero goes through in the animation. This project was a major turning point because I started to truly understand the major design elements and put them into action.

Image-making

The image-making phase was quite challenging. I knew I wanted to create dynamic illustrations and tell a strong narrative through using simple shapes. By simplifying my shape language, I began to focus on adding or subjecting tension points in each of the style frames.

Another major element that I began to experiment was the usage of textures. Prior to this project, my illustrations were flat vectors. It was during this project that I began to utilize different techniques to bring more personality into the images. Suddenly, my simple shapes came to life and began to tell a strong narrative.

This project taught me a plethora of lessons. One of the major takeaways from this project was learning to produce a production-ready animation. I learned how to create a strong narrative arc as well as honing in stronger technical skills in After Effects.
