Book Response: Chapter 1

The book demonstrated the evolution of typography through a visual timeline. It is amazing to see the origins of writing starting in 3150 BCE – the simple characters carved into the stones remind us of the progression that typography has gone through. The milestones exhibited in the chapter directly connect with the typography exercises we had in class. The first exercise was re-drawing the letters of specific typefaces. The tedious work and craftsmanship emphasized in that exercise helped me understand the long process that had to be done before Gutenburg created the movable type. The next class activity that we spent in the letter press studio allowed me to understand the importance behind Gutenburg’s invention. This chapter encompasses the evolution of graphic design to what we know today. This past week, we got the opportunity to visit FirstBuild and see what our technology today offers us. From spending hours away sculpting the perfect “S” to watching in real time an S carve out of a piece of wood truly demonstrates how much typography has changed and will continue to change in our future.
